How do Twitter ads work?

With hundreds of millions of tweets sent every day, and the ever-changing Twitter algorithm, it can be easy for your brand posts and Twitter marketing to get lost in the noise. This is where Twitter ads come in. Advertising on Twitter is an opportunity for your brand to promote its products and reach new users who may be interested in what your brand has to offer. Since there are many very simple Twitter ad formats and no minimum ad budget, now is the time to think about running your first Twitter ad. In this guide, you’ll learn about the different types of Twitter ads, how to create your first-ever campaign, and tips to remember when creating your own Twitter ads.

Types of Twitter ads

There are several types of Twitter ads to choose from to help your brand goals and fit your social media marketing strategy. Promoted Tweets Promoted Tweets look a lot like regular Tweets. What’s different is that the advertiser is paying to show the content to people who don’t already follow that advertiser on Twitter. Like regular tweets, they can be liked, retweeted, and commented on. But they are labeled as an advertisement: they will always say “Upgraded” in the bottom left corner. Promoted Tweets can also contain video and will automatically play in users’ timelines. If the video is less than 60 seconds, the video repeats. Promoted Tweets, like this example from Subway, appear in target users’ timelines, on user profiles, at the top of search results and in Twitter’s mobile and desktop apps.

Promotion of accounts:

Instead of promoting just one tweet, this type of Twitter ad allows you to promote your brand’s entire Twitter account. It targets users who don’t already follow your brand and can help grow your business’ Twitter following. Promoted accounts are displayed in the timelines of potential followers. The ad will also appear in “Who to follow” suggestions and in search results. In addition to labeling it to show that it has been “promoted,” it also includes a follow button.

Promoted trends

Trending Topics on Twitter is a high turnover list on the right side of Twitter. This is a collection of the most popular topics and hashtags that are being used in real time. Users can interact with a Promoted Trend in the same way they would interact with any other trending topic. What is different is that where the brand is purchased will be displayed as “Promoted” to the target users. The promoted trend will also appear as one of the first locations under the “Trends that are right for you” section, either in the Explore tab or in the timeline. When users click on the Promoted Trend, they’ll see search results for that topic with a Promoted Tweet from your brand at the top.
